Throw a House Party for the State of the Union Address

Does the thought of watching President Bush give the State of the Union address (scheduled for January 31) leave you feeling a bit depressed? We have the solution: Throw a house party to support UFPJ and your local peace and justice group. And have fun!

To support your efforts in hosting a house party, we have prepared a "Parties for Peace & Justice" kit, with instructions and a timeline for throwing a house party, a sample invitation, RSVP form and other support materials. We also have ideas for games and talking points to use for Bush's State of the Union Address, including a "Track the Lies" tally sheet. Visit the merchandise section of our website today to order stickers, posters, yard signs, and other party favors!

January 31st is not the State of the Union.  It's a State of Emergency!  Join us as we Drown Out Bush's Lies.

Bring musical instruments, noisemakers, boomboxes, kazoos, our voices--whatever!  We will not let Bush chart out the next year without hearing from the ones who are affected most by his regimes actions--THE PEOPLE.  Our Demand: Bush Step Down! And Take Your Whole Program With You!

Start: 7:30 pm
End: 9:30 pm

Event Description:

Sojourners is encouraging people throughout the US to organize or attend speech-watching parties and discussions:

Organizing or attending a State of our Values watch is an easy and fun way to build community, discuss President Bush's speech with fellow people of faith, and contribute our voices to the national dialogue about whether our values and priorities as a nation are being met. Imagine this: With your passion and energy, we will organize hundreds of State of our Values watches in churches and communities of faith across the country. Think of the media story: "People of faith react to the State of the Union: News at 11." It's time to raise our prophetic voices together!

Never done anything like this before? We've put together a comprehensive tool kit that will help you through this process step by step. Organizers will also be able to participate in conference calls with Sojourners and Call to Renewal staff, as well as fellow organizers, to compare notes and ideas. Putting together a successful State of Our Values watch will be a rewarding, empowering, and fun experience.

To host a speech-watching party in your home, church, or other location, or to find one that's already planned near you.
